2. Allow Any Activity with a Wildcard
Any event, also called a wildcard, captures zero or more records at its position in a sequence (a series of actions).
Use it when you want to allow or explore activity without defining every action individually.
You can place Any at the beginning, between named events, or directly before End. You can also use it at multiple positions in the same query.
Build the Query
Drag Any event from System Defined Events onto the canvas and connect it where you want to allow other activity.
Start → Product Viewed → Any → Payment Completed → EndThis query finds a product view followed by a completed payment for the same EventOwner, allowing other activity between them.
All these sequences can match:
- Product Viewed → Payment Completed
- Product Viewed → Added to Cart → Payment Completed
- Product Viewed → Search → Read Reviews → Added to Cart → Payment Completed
The named events must still occur in the defined order. Any stops capturing when the following named event matches.
Where to Use It
Start → Any → Payment Failed → EndCapture activity leading up to a failed payment.
Start → Ticket Opened → Any → Ticket Resolved → EndCapture activity between opening and resolving a ticket.
Start → Login Failed → Any → EndCapture activity following a failed login. Capture ends when the queried records for that EventOwner end or the sequence record limit is reached.
Start → Product Viewed → Any → Added to Cart → Any → Payment Completed → EndCapture activity between viewing a product and adding it to the cart, and separately between adding it to the cart and completing payment. Each Any captures its own set of records.
Inspect the Captured Activity
Use Show complete sequence in the results to inspect the records captured by Any.
Important Notes
- Any allows zero records, so consecutive named events can still match.
- Any captures records only from the selected sources and within the query’s date/time range.
- By default, each sequence is limited to 50 records, including named events and records captured by every Any in that sequence.
- For Any → End, reaching the end of the EventOwner’s queried records completes the sequence. Reaching the record limit closes it with COMPLETED_LIMIT_REACHED.
- Completion at the record limit means later activity was outside that sequence’s captured window.
Next: Submit the query and view results.
